Digital Garden
🌿 What is a Digital Garden?
Rooted in Andy Matuschak & Maggie Appleton's evergreen note taxonomy: articles are not ephemeral chronologies, but living organisms tended over time:
- 🌱 Seedling: Raw inspiration, reading logs, open questions
- 🌿 Budding: Structured thesis, early proofs, actively revised
- 🌳 Evergreen: Closed logic, enduring, foundational reference
- 🔬 Speculative: Empirical hypotheses coupled with lab instruments
Scope note. File hashes, compatibility checks, and aggregation of constructed records were executed. No model training or measured improvement is reported.
Define the scope of a conclusion
“Recovery data helps” needs a task, baseline, intervention, budget, metric, and environment. Replacing ordinary demonstrations is different from adding extra training tokens. Reference-history evaluation is different from closed-loop task execution.
Keep the pre-run plan, factual run record, and interpretation separately. Give retries, resumed runs, and reevaluations explicit identities and relationships.
Preserve artifact identity and meaning
Datasheets for Datasets discusses composition, processing, uses, and maintenance. Model Cards includes versions, intended uses, evaluation conditions, and limitations. These reporting ideas inform the proposed research records; the article’s workflow is not a mandated platform format.
The companion script hashes two toy JSONL rows, then detects changed order and changed contents. A hash identifies bytes; it does not prove data quality, independence, or suitability. Preserve shard order, effective configuration, and permitted access information as well.
Check comparability before subtracting scores
Three constructed pairs have baseline counts 60,70,65 and candidate counts 64,72,66, each out of 100. The mean paired difference is 7/3 percentage points. A fourth record using another evaluation set is rejected by the toy comparison check.
Real checks must also cover the hypothesis-specific controls, while explicitly permitting the intended intervention. Matching a few metadata fields does not establish causal validity. Preserve whether repetitions are training runs, tasks, or samples.
Keep failures visible without inventing accuracy
An interrupted run has no completed accuracy estimate. Record it separately from an evaluated negative result and an incomparable result. Include failed attempts in cost and completion reporting. If completion depends on the method, the average among completed runs may be selected and cannot describe all attempts.
A resource failure can refute feasibility under a specific budget without implying zero task accuracy. If the evaluator changes, reevaluate both models or mark the comparison unavailable.
Choose an experiment that distinguishes explanations
Separate reported paper findings, derivations, toy checks, actual observations, and untested interpretations. An improvement could reflect recovery behavior, familiar parameters, or evaluator preferences; design the next comparison to distinguish these possibilities.
The Chinese article closes with a compact report structure and an independent reconstruction check: rebuild each table from saved raw records, fail explicitly when evidence is missing, and state what new evidence would change the decision.
